We just wanted to update you on Chelsea, the beautiful kelpie x girl we adopted from you in October. She has settled in really well, and is an absolute pleasure to have around.

Chelsea herding sheep

She has been a busy girl since we brought her home! She has breezed through a basic obedience course, is learning sheep herding and has just started agility classes. We were warned (and could see) when we picked her up that she had an obsession with fetch, but with a few tips from Cecile at Paw Prints Training we have turned it into a great training tool, since she will do anything to get you to throw a ball one more time.

We also adopted a 9 month old kelpie boy from another shelter last December. Although Chelsea wasn’t too sure about this hyperactive kid at first, she has started to realise that when the humans are being boring he is still keen to play with her, so they are slowly becoming friends. Fortunately the new boy adores her and doesn’t have a trace of aggression in him, so even though Chelsea is far more interested in humans than other dogs they coexist happily.

Chelsea at the beach

She loves her run on the beach every morning and has great recall except when she sees one of her human friends - then she’s off to drop her ball at their feet and look up with big hopeful eyes until they throw it. Despite all the morning’s excitement she’s quiet and relaxed during the day and likes to sleep next to me on the couch while I work on my laptop. She’s a perfect ambassador for how well kelpies can settle in to being loyal, obedient suburban pets with some exercise and mental stimulation.

Thank you to everyone at Shenton Park who looked after her until we found her. She’s a wonderful, sweet dog and we’re so glad we brought her into our family.

  • I remember Chelsea well. She used to amuse me by dropping her ball through the wire of her kennel when someone passed by, just in case they fancied a game. I am really pleased she has such a lovely home.
