Chica's funny faces has won hearts

I adopted Chica in September 2009 - we've been celebrating six months together and her 5th birthday this weekend!

Playing in the park

I didn't expect finding a friend for my lifestyle would be easy, as I'm away from home 10 hours a day and only have a small courtyard to speak of. The Dogs' Home staff were really helpful, friendly and - to put it plainly - very straightforward about the time and affection commitment that dog ownership would be. It was very clear that they cared passionately for the well-being of the dogs in their care and wanted to ensure a good match. Chica's name came up as a suitable companion, very calm and quiet, "the type to enjoy a walk in the evenings and a cuddle on the couch afterwards". A heart-warming first meeting and a week of training (for me) later, Chica was on her way to her new home.

Since then, Chica has been enjoying daily evening walks and has been on a fairly strict diet to help her lose weight. After adopting her at 32kgs, I'm happy to report that she's improved to a svelt 26.5kgs!

I'm yet to take her to formal training (I can't drive), but some in-home advice from a trainer shortly after adopting has helped immensely (thanks Cecile!). For the most part Chica's extremely well-behaved: she happily walks at my pace, she already knows to 'sit' and 'lie down', and her paw 'shake' can melt hearts. The only problem is her intimidating reaction to strangers (especially males), but we're working on it - I've learned from the Home staff and trainers how to properly introduce people so that once we're past the initial reaction, she settles down for a treat and a pat.

Big smile

I think the funniest thing about Chica has been her variety of expressions - she can make me laugh just by looking at me over her shoulder or around a corner. Chica's a major feature on my Facebook (some photos attached), and she also recently featured in the Dogs' Home calendar as Ms February... a very photogenic lady, I think!

Chica has really lightened up my home and my life, and I'm so grateful to the staff at the Home for caring for her and helping me find her. I would say to anyone out there looking for a dog: head down to the home and have a chat to the staff, even if you think your lifestyle may not suit a dog. It's worth it!
