Hard work and lots of love paid off for Charlie

It’s been a month now since we brought Charlie home, and he has come such a long way in that short time.

Charlie's smiles

He was scared of everything, especially us. He wouldn’t even walk into a room without a lot of encouragement. The first few days we let him find his own way around and before long he was playing in the garden and acting like a normal happy dog. He absolutely loves anything with a rope that he can swing around like a lunatic – it’s amazing that he never hurts himself, or anyone else for that matter.

He was eight months when we got him, but at times it seemed like he was a lot younger. We were pretty much teaching him things from scratch. It was hard but so rewarding, and so far he’s learnt his manners and even a few tricks. We’re currently teaching him how to catch the ball in anticipation of the day he picks up his first frisbee – can’t wait! He’s met our neighbours and their Kelpie, Max, and wow was that a show of athleticism!

I won’t lie and say it has been plain-sailing and Charlie has definitely taught us the virtue of patience – but then the same can be said of any dog. If we go out he goes in search of anything with our smell (today when we got home after a trip to the shops we found three pairs of shoes, all matching, in the garden). But the occasional naughtiness is nothing compared to the love and joy he has given us.

I highly recommend Shenton Dogs Home and urge anyone thinking of getting a dog to consider adoption first. The only real difficulty is trying not to spoil them.

Best wishes, Caroline, Seb and Charlie

  • Thank you so much for loving Charlie and having the patience to show him what it is like to be part of such a caring family. He is one very fortunate boy!
