Kiri is the boss of her household

I realised it has been nearly two years since my husband and I adopted Kiri, and we have been reminiscing about when she first came into our lives, so I thought the staff at the Refuge might be interested to hear about her journey.

For such a tiny thing, Kiri sees herself as the big boss of the house – I don’t think she knows she’s a dog, she thinks she’s one of us! She is incredibly loving and well-behaved; she came to us as a quiet, scared dog, now she is full of beans and thrives on the attention from my friends and family.

Not long after we adopted her, my husband relocated to the country for 4 months for work and so having to live alone, Kiri was a wonderful companion for me and we formed an unbreakable bond. She was my constant shadow, and even accompanied me on my frequent road-trips east to visit my husband. My husband, who agreed that I could have a dog, thought she would be more ‘my’ dog – he never expected to love her as much as he does!

When we adopted Kiri, we were aware she had medical issues with her legs as she had luxating patellas, and for a while she was fine, but after a while the condition began to get worse and she required surgery. She was such a brave trooper; she completed the surgeries for each affected leg in December 2013 and April 2014 and her legs are now as good as new! The cost was astronomical, but it was worth every cent to improve the quality of her life and give her the happy, carefree life she deserves.

We are forever grateful to staff at the Refuge for caring for Kiri during her time there and letting us adopt her; we would be lost without her and she is probably pretty smug knowing she hit the jackpot with getting us for her ‘mum & dad’.
