Hi to all the amazing people at the Shenton Park dog refuge,

Mack

Before I moved to Melbourne 2 years ago, I volunteered on Saturdays at the refuge for almost 2 years walking the dogs after my first dog passed away - to get my fix of puppy time and give something back to my favourite animals.

After 4 months volunteering, I convinced my family to adopt another dog in our family and I had my eye on a gorgeous staffy called Blossom. I'd walked and played with her several times & after one Saturday volunteering I was set she was going to be our new family member. I brought my parents to the refuge the next day, only to discover she had been adopted after I left my volunteering shift the day before...I was devastated.

The next weekend, I was there for my usual Saturday shift, and was told to walk one of the long-termers who I'd never walked before, a ball-crazy, ADD, shadow-chasing, Staffy-X called Mack.

I learnt that Mack was 3 and had spent half of his life at the home, without much adoption interest. While I could see he was definitely a handful, I instantly bonded with him and knew he was special. I decided that day I was going to take him home on a foster weekend, to give him a break from the refuge and a big backyard to run around in for a couple of days.

Mack

Needless to say...I was back at the home on Monday signing the adoption papers, and he never had to come back to the refuge again. Mack had managed to win the hearts of my family in just a weekend.

Sadly, Mack fell ill last year and passed away this month, just before his 9th birthday. His infectious character, effervescent energy and endless love for us was taken away too soon, but we couldn't be more grateful for the 5 and a half years we had with him and we'll never forget him.

I'd like to thank the SP dog refuge for allowing me to volunteer there, because if it wasn't for that opportunity I would've never met Mack and brought his amazing personality into my family. The work you do at the refuge is invaluable and no doubt one of the reasons more people are choosing to adopt needy animals who need a second chance.

One day I will be back to find another special pooch who needs my cuddles & love!

Mack

Thankyou so much, just wanted to share with you about Mack as I know he was as favourite with some of the vollies while he was there!

  • Hi Bree, a lovely tribute to the full of character black and white dynamo that was Max. I remember him very well and was sad to hear you lost him recently. But so pleased that you enjoyed his company for over 5 yrs. Sarah.
