Sue gets her 'fur fix' with our hounds

My reasons for volunteering at Shenton Park Dogs Home are in many ways pretty selfish ones. I have always loved dogs and would love to have one of my own but I live in an apartment complex which unfortunately does not allow pets. I also travel overseas rather a lot which makes dog ownership rather difficult. By helping out at the Refuge I get a regular “fur fix”, I meet lots of gorgeous hounds, I feel that I am helping them put their best paw forward to prospective adopters and I get plenty of exercise into the bargain.

My boyfriend Dan and I adopted Jessie on the 28th May, and we are so in love with her!  We were told that Jessie was a farm dog and had been in the Refuge since February. She is so lovely and gentle and sweet, and has settled into life with us so quickly and easily.

Sybil shows her smoochy side

We just wanted to update you on Lexie’s (formally Sybil) progress since her adoption on April 5th.  She has settled in marvellously and we couldn’t be more smitten with her if we tried.  Our smoochy girl is spoilt absolutely rotten and a much-loved addition to our family. Her two feline brothers were not overly keen on the idea at first but have now fully accepted her as a family member and often hang in the garden with her.  Hendrix especially likes to share her food and her bed and will quite often swat her as she walks past.  She has been extremely gentle with them despite her size and really wants to play with them.

In April 2009 I decided to make a trip to the refuge to have a look to see if there were any Boxers available. While walking through bricks I came across this beautiful looking dog sitting up against the gate with great blue eyes looking at me.  Granted he was not a boxer but at this point I was sold!

We adopted Billy Boy on Saturday the 11th June.....we lost our beautiful kayne, a red cloud kelpie/wiemarana last March and then our adored English staffy this March...heartbreaking, as they had both been with us, an integral part of our family, since our children were in primary school, for some 14 years. We had actually agreed to having a break...before getting another dog.....not realisiing it was only to be a short break!!!!
