Attached please find some pics of Peppi the Standard Schnauzer that I thought you may like to see. As you can see she has settled in quite well and appears to be quite relaxed to say the least.

My name is Sue Peacock and in 2001 we adopted Ned from the Shenton Park Dog Refuge.  He was already nearly two and nobody seemed to know much about his background.

Ella flies through the honeymoon period

Just thought I’d update you on how Ella (aka Flipper) the Kelpie is getting along. Ella has been with us 6 months now and is settling in very well.

At first Ella was scared of a lot of sounds especially the vacuum cleaner and kitchen appliances, but she has overcome all of these fears now, except for the vacuum cleaner which she still treats with suspicion.

According to the Excellent information book that you receive when adopting your new canine companion, there can be a honeymoon period.  Clearly, Ella had not read the book!  In the first 2 weeks she was full-on even for a Kelpie.  I think she decided to roadtest us and had the attitude that if you can handle me at my most chaotic, you’ll do OK as my new pack leaders. I just kept telling myself that it was teenage exuberance after being confined to a kennel.

At the end of 2 weeks, just as I was beginning to think she was running on nuclear power, she suddenly settled down into a different and much calmer dog. Since then we have been having a fabulous time together, especially at the beach.  As far as Ella is concerned every dog & human she meets is her friend.

We’ve done 2 courses of adolescent dog training with Amicus Dog Training since March, as Ella loved socialising with the other dogs and we learned a lot.  When she first came home she had a habit of nipping your lower legs when she became very excited (not unexpected in a working breed) and the trainer Simone, suggested a pair of wellies for protection while we got her out of the habit.  These did the trick very nicely and nipping is no longer an issue.

We put in the time and effort on Ella’s training and it has really paid off.  Ella is a happy dog when she knows exactly what is expected of her and we now understand ‘kelpie’dog language much better.

Ella is a delight to have around, she has a very inquisitive nature and is a great companion for me while I work at home; I wouldn’t be without her.

Thank you to all the volunteers who so generously give their love and time to the refuge dogs. And thank you to all those who worked to keep Ella safe and well until we could adopt her.

Best wishes

Joanne and David J

Just an update on Arrow.  He is at the moment holidaying with Olivia at Cowaramup at a lovely place – the Silversprings Chalets.  This is gorgeous family pet-friendly accommodation in a most gorgeous part of the world. Lots of lovely fresh air and green fields to run in.  In the evening, Arrow is exhausted and curls up in front of the fireplace. Have spoken to Olivia and they are both having a lovely time.
