Seeing it is Valentine’s season, I thought I would contribute to the smoochy success stories.
Poppy was a replacement for our much loved Max (poodle x) who had passed away several months earlier. We are older and hadn’t planned to actually have another dog as we felt maybe we would like to travel, and have a pet free time for awhile. This turned out to be harder than we expected and each day I, in particular pined for the company of a companion dog.
We decided that we would search the Dog refuges in Perth and had in mind, a larger dog. We arrived at Shenton Park and looked around. We were walking past the enclosures and had spotted a dog a little further along, but paused and looked down at this tiny little thing shivering and shaking in her cage. She looked so adorable but very tiny and we had to stop and give it some thought.
A Jack Russell, aren’t they yappy we wondered? But we decided trial her out the back of the compound and found she was a little aloof – should we give this little dog a go? There was something special about her and we wanted it to work.
As they say it is all history, after nearly two years, she is so entrenched in our hearts, Poppy girl, (formerly Jackie O), sleeps on our bed, gets walked, gets spoilt, is asked after from rellies interstate, and has more photos taken than in a baby album.
She is affectionate, fine with our ancient cat and a very polite girl with our two laying hens Gloria and Evelyn. She loves nothing more than to have a tummy rub at night on the bed and we think she was loved by small children in her other life as she adores small children. She is a huge joy to us and I couldn’t imagine life without her.
