Sammy loves being with his new family

In June this year, we lost our beautiful Biggles, a 15 year old German Shepherd cross we had adopted from the Refuge way back in 2006. He had waited for a year for someone to come and love him, perhaps because he was older and not good with other dogs. While we could never replace Biggles, there was room in our hearts and home to love another dog, so it was back to the refuge a few weeks later.

Sammy

As with Biggles, we had already taken a shine to Sammy through the website and facebook, and we knew he had been waiting patiently for almost two years. We had our first meeting in the yard, and haven't looked back.

Despite a slight hiccup in the early days when his excitement got the better of him and he hurt a paw meeting the rabbits, he settled in quickly and became an important part of our lives (although the bunnies may not agree!)

Several months on, and we have moved out to the hills to a small acreage. Sammy loves having room to run and can now have some quality off lead time in the paddocks. Our place backs on to miles of trails through the forest, and our morning walks are one of life's pleasures. He is great company around the home and loves to be anywhere we are.

He has also dropped a few kilos and no longer needs weight control food - in fact, I am having to increase his rations slightly to keep the condition on him.

Sammy

His antics keep us amused and he has a growing arsenal of toys for chasing, tugging and chewing. His favourite by far is his Kong Bounzer - even tennis balls don't get picked from the toy bucket if the bounzer is there! He does have a bit of a thing for throwing and chasing squeaky toys around the house - usually late at night. The squeakier, the better. He is also quite talkative and will snap his jaws like a crocodile when he wants something.

We have enlisted the help of Sonya from Dog Charming to help Sammy work on his dog issues. Although we have a long way to go, Sonya's advice has been a huge help so far.

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers at the shelter for giving Sammy a second chance. It was a long wait, but I hope it was worthwhile. Sammy has found his forever home!
