TNT - Treacle 'n Thommo are dynamite

On Friday, I was lucky enough to be introduced to a couple of lovely (yet unfortunate) dogs at Shenton Park Dog Refuge Home by the wonderful and dedicated staff (a special big thanks to Kirsty!).  Although, I wished I could take each one of them home, I could not care for each one adequately, so I adopted just one lovely dog.....Treacle.

Treacle

Treacle has got a little bit of baggage; not very sociable towards other animals (can't be let off the leash...yet); allergies to certain foods; medication to take and purchase; and a "snotty" nose.  I suppose this is why he has been left for a period without anyone adopting him.....babies and adults (people) aren't perfect, so why should our four legged friends be any different???  Anyway, we seemed to hit it off and be comfortable together, and his baggage wasn't a concern, so I adopted this lovely little furry man - faults and all.

Over the weekend we spent a fair bit of time in each others company, growing used to each other and settling in to our home together.  I went and bought an outside den for him to rest/sleep in during the day whilst I'm at work (a nice one, raised off the floor with a canvas cover and sides, suspended mattress and a padded bed), a few toys (chewy, chasing & tugging varieties), another Kong, and a clam shell (for water - drinking and bathing), all for when he's outside.  When I'm at home though, he's allowed inside and outside at his leisure.  He enjoys his twice daily walks (morning and late arvo) and ball/Kong chasing is a favourite backyard activity....excluding food.  Speaking of which, I feed him his special diet, fresh every morning and afternoon, with the only snacks being the ZD dog biscuits or Sweet Potato Dog snacks (but only for rewards, not to spoil him).  He also enjoys a bit of rough play (pushing, shoving and ground wrestling etc... nothing too rough however) and tug-of-war with an approved knotted rope.

Yesterday, was the first day back at work for me, and I was worried for him.  I was anxious thinking he might have thought he'd been left and take flight, so I had a relative call by a couple of times to check and reassure him....he was fine and no troubles (Phew!)  I was so happy to see him upon my return from work and inturn he was happy to see me.  As I wear a uniform to work, he soon will associate this attire with me being away for awhile - I think he already knows???  I will also have someone call pass today and check in on him.

I know Treacle was a favourite amongst several of the staff and volunteers, so I will endeavour to keep everyone interested in Treacle's future and welfare, updated with words and few photos.  Eventually, I will organise a day when Treacle 'n' Thommo (TNT = we're dynamite together!) can come pass for an AM or PM visit to the shelter - this will be pre-empted so those wishing to can organise to come and visit.

  • Thank you for giving so much love and care to such a deserving boy.
You were so right in your comment on the unrealistic and unfair perfection that so many expect of their dogs. Perfection definitely has no character which Treacle and all the dogs at the shelter have in abundance.

  • Thank you so much for letting us know how darling Treacle is going. He is certainly a favourite of mine. We took many trips to the beach, dozens of walks, hundreds of cuddles. He's definitely a real mates dog, but I'm sure toy know that by now.
I'm so glad you fell in love with this incredible boy (and seemingly vise versa already). Can't wait to hear more when he's fully settled.
We all really appreciate you letting us know when you come for a visit. I'm so very happy Treacle has found such a loving home.

  • For all of us volunteers who so wanted Treacle to have a wonderful home ... it seems our wishes have come true. Thankyou so much Thommo, for treating Treacle with so much caring and reponsibility, and for letting us share it with you both.
