Yogi caught her family by surprise

My partner Andy, and I wanted to share the story of our Yogi, (previously Mulan) whom we adopted from the refuge this year. We also wanted to thank Shenton Park so much for finding her for us.

My partner and I  have wanted a dog for years and years, however as we were renting we could not get a dog. In August this year we finally bought our first home which we were due to move into in October. However prior to moving in, my partner Andy, went to the Shenton Park Dog Shelter to enquire about the adoption process (I did not want to go initially as I thought it would be to sad for me!).

On that visit, weeks before we intended to get a dog, Yogi found him! I met her the next day and she was adopted by us that afternoon. As we had not moved yet, she had to remain at the shelter for a few weeks. We would both come and visit her as much as we could in the weeks leading up to our move and took her for big long walks etc. We were so glad we did this, as this meant Yogi got to know us and was comfortable with us before we finally got to take her home on the 10th October 2013.

Adopting Yogi is the best thing we have ever done, we love her so much. She just brings so much happiness (and cheekiness) to our lives! We find ourselves adjusting our daily habits so we can spend more time with her, she is just the best. She loves her time at the beach, and loves chasing us around the park, she is loyal and loving and naughty!!

When we first met Yogi at the shelter, she was described as being cautious, nervous and would need lots of reassurance and attention. When we met Yogi, she was already very much a changed girl and showed very little sign of any of these traits. Every now and then she will see someone or something that obviously triggers some sort of distressing memory, and our outgoing girl becomes cautious and scared. It is really distressing to think that she clearly had some trauma in the past and I would hate to think what might have become of her if the Shenton Park Dog Refuge had not rescued her.

You guys do such a brilliant job, we are so indebted to the Shenton Park dog refuge and all the wonderful staff for assisting Yogi to become the wonderful dog she is. Both Andy and I 'like' the Shenton Park facebook page and our favourite posts are the happy adoptee stories.

Thank you again

  • Your story is what makes it all worthwhile. I saw Andy with Yogi at the refuge and heard about your adoption and thought lucky Mulan and so she is. Thank you for sharing.

  • What a beautiful story, Yogi is one of the lucky ones and you guys are awesome for finding her. To all the workers, trainers and vollies a big thankyou for your dedication. I would love another dog, but already have 3 rescue dogs, who all play together as a pack. For anyone who can have more than one dog, please do so as dogs love to have another doggie companion. A big cheer to Shenton Park people and furry family
