I’d like to take this time to tell you about a dog my family adopted.

Zena

13 years ago my family and I came to Shenton Park Dogs Refuge Home to find our furever friend, after begging and harassing our parents they finally caved in, and what better way to start off a great friendship than rescuing a puppy from a shelter. We finally found the puppy we wanted to take home, she was an 8 week old tan mastiff cross ridgeback, we named her Zena.  We couldn’t have been more happy to have her in our lives.

Me being 6 years old at the time when we adopted her and being the youngest of 4 children Zena was fantastic with me, so gentle, so loving. All us children played with her, took her to the park, for walks etc. after having a pet for so long we realised she had become more than a pet to us, she became family. Although Zena had her ups and downs with her wellness we were willing to do anything for her, cost was never an issue for us.

It was with extreme heartache that on the 29th of March 2013 that we had to make the hardest decision to put her to sleep forever. More than a week later it’s still hard on the whole family. She was always gentle with children, she was always protective, she even killed a venomous snake that made its way into our back yard. Whenever she managed to get out through the back gate and explore the neighbourhood she would always come back home when we finished school. She was and always will be my best friend, and a huge part of my family.

I want to thank Shenton Park Dog Refuge Home for giving me the best 13 years of my life and for allowing me to have what time I did with my beautiful girl. She may be gone, but she will always be in my heart.

Today we get to be reunited with her (We are picking up her ashes from Lawnswood) and she will always be with us.

I have attached a photo of Zena.

Regards,

Kate Lonsdale

  • When a child grows up with a dog a special
bond is forged and never forgotten. Your
family will always remember Zena, I'm sure
there are many happy photos of "growing
up with Zena". Smile and remember her!

  • I am so sorry for your loss

Zina will have taught you so much during her life, much can be used, when you are ready , to have another furry companion.

  • What a beautiful story. We recently laid our Mum's 15yr old cat to rest at the cemetery at Shenton Park, and it still is painful. I have a 10yr old and a 1yr old Boxer, a 12yr old cat and Mum has the brother to the puss who we had to put to sleep. One day they will all be buried together and we can visit. I hope you and your family adopt another pup again. They are wonderful at the Refuge. I volunteered 2yrs ago and it was very rewarding. Jenny
